Bad Company: Who are Mitt Romney’s Real Friends?

Through his many business contacts Romney has managed to raise millions of dollars and develop relationships with thousands of people. Some of these people are less than reputable characters. One such individual, Robert Lichfield, the Co-chairman of Romney’s Utah finance committee, is being brought to court for alleged child abuse. According to theHill.com, 133 plaintiffs have brought a suit against Mr. Lichfield for owning and operating residential boarding schools for troubled teens where students were “subjected to physical abuse, emotional abuse and sexual abuse.”  Among other things the allegations claim that students were subject to unsanitary living conditions, denied adequate food, exposed to extreme weather conditions, beatings, confinement in dog cages, and sexual fondling. The plaintiffs claim that Lichfield and his partners have made a significant profit off the schools. All told Lichfield has raised almost $3 million for the Romney campaign.

Another fine example of some of Mitt’s respectable companions is Kem Gardner. Kem is a close friend of Romney’s and one of his most generous donors, so generous that he has made several illegal campaign contributions to the former Governor. According to the Salt Lake Tribune Gardner chartered a Jet Blue plane to fly 150 people from Utah to Boston for Romney’s second national call. Since the passengers were flying to volunteer for the campaign on Mr. Gardner's dollar and not the Romney campaign's, it violates the Federal Elections Commissions rules for campaign contributions. However, Mr. Gardner sees no problem with the situation, stating “They don't care how you get there.” A statement that apparently applies to dog travel as well.
